Series: Final Fantasy IX

Age: 16
Canon Point: Between the point where he tried to rescue Kuja and when he was reunited with Dagger.
Canon History: https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Zidane_Tribal

Personality:Zidane is a young thief with a big heart! He is always willing to help anyone who is in need – even if that person is somebody he does not like very much. Are you in danger? Zidane will put his own life at risk to save you. Are you feeling down? Zidane will always be there for you and while he won’t force you to tell him pour your heart out, he will try and make you smile again, whether it involves saying a few words of encouragement, trying to distract you with fun to do (as he tried to take Dagger around town when she was feeling miserable to make her feel better, for example) or telling you not to think about it too much.

As to why this boy helps people – well, there is the quote in the game referring to Zidane: “You don’t need a reason to help people”. In many ways, it’s just who he is. Zidane further affirms this saying “I just wanna protect the people I’m with. It doesn’t matter whether I can or not. It’s just what I believe in”.

Zidane is also friendly and outgoing. Unlike anti-social Final Fantasy heroes such as Cloud and Squall, he enjoys hanging around with others and is not afraid to meet new people – especially women. If he spots an attractive girl, he will not stop himself from going up and flirting with her. That said, however at Zidane’s canon point, he knows he’s love with Dagger. She is the woman he cares about the most and he will stick with her. That will not stop him from using embarrassing pickup lines in order to compliment or befriend a pretty woman he meets, however, even though he does not intend to date them.

All of this might suggest that Zidane is extremely simple-minded, shallow and stupid, which is actually far from the truth. However, Zidane is not unrealistic despite his optimism. Two party members cannot climb the Iifa Tree to fight the main antagonist Kuja? Hey, there’s some gargant grass nearby so there are probably gargants too. Why not try and find one to take everyone up there? Steiner thinks that he should take Dagger/Princess Garnet back to Alexandria Castle? That’s a stupid idea because they are at the bottom of a dangerous valley surrounded by tall cliffs and the only realistic routes back to Alexandria are closed so it’s better to press forward for the moment. Princess Garnet has run away from home and is trying to avoid capture? She needs to come up with an alias and start acting like a commoner and Zidane gives her a lot of praise and encouragement. Zidane won’t deny barriers in the way but he’ll find another way round for the time being. And while not all his ideas are necessarily good ones (he’s young enough to be the type of person who thinks that body slamming into a magic barrier or a sealed door is a good idea) he can have some crafty ways to get out of situations (like avoiding a fight with a potentially violent security guard by taking advantage of his youthful appearance and pretending to be a timid and innocent bystander instead of a thief who just burgled a house).

Zidane also has a great amount of empathy for others. With Dagger, he tries to teach her about the ways of the world and encourages her to realise that she does not need to feel responsible for people wanting to protect and help her or that she doesn’t need to put so much pressure on herself to be the best queen ever. With Freya, he sticks by her encourages her to move forward from the loss of her boyfriend and destruction of her hometown so she can do what she can to protect her people, not dwell on what should have happened. Towards Vivi, he acts like an older brother, seeing how frightened and uneasy the kid is about when he discovers his origins (especially as Zidane knows what it’s like to not know where you come from – more on that later). With Eiko, he looks out for her because she’s a six-year-old orphan in a ruined village full of moogles and is probably massively lonely. He may be silly at times but Zidane’s a pretty deep-thinking individual, willing to offer his own insight when his friends are feeling crappy.

None of this makes this makes Zidane a pure-hearted being, however. Having been raised by thieves from the age of four, some of his morals are still skewed despite his warm heart. While Zidane won’t needlessly kill, he is not above doing things like theft or beating up guards and taking their clothes in order to sneak into a mansion.

Zidane does not care much for etiquette either. He swears occasionally, casually scratches his butt from time to time, can (and has been known to) make incredibly tactless comments (eg. being openly horrified at Regent’s appearance when he turned back into a human) and has no qualms about insulting people whom he does not get along with (eg. he’ll tolerate Steiner’s constantly accusing him of having designs on the princess and will travel with him because he has to but all the same he isn’t above giving the princess’s stuffy knight childish nicknames or ditching him should the first opportunity arise). Zidane’s a pretty laidback kid and gets along with most people but manners are not his strong point, especially if he thinks you’re a jerk.

His shameless flirting can also annoy others. The most obvious example would be Dagger, a naïve princess who was first massively embarrassed by him and then started making polite and snarky retorts the more she became familiar with his behaviour. However, it can also bother people around him (Freya called him out for disturbing customers in a bar when he tried to ask the barmaid out) or occasionally distract him (he hits on Lani when he meets her without considering that a few seconds earlier she implied that she had sent a monster on him and his companions). That said, Zidane does start to gain a little self-awareness of how obnoxious his flirting can come across when Eiko uses the exact same sort of pickup lines to get his attention and makes him uncomfortable. And so he tries to tone his flirting down. A little.

Zidane’s tendency to help others can be a flaw as he is willing run headfirst into danger when doing it with very little thought to his own well-being. He once tried to use himself as bait when he and his companions were escaping a swarm of monsters in the Evil Forest so the others could get away safely. Had Blank not pushed him out of the way, he could have ended up being turned to stone along with the rest of the Evil Forest (which was what happened to Blank). This self-sacrificial nature could get him into tons of trouble.

More importantly though, there’s an irony in Zidane’s ability to look at the bright side of things and give sage advice and insight when his friends are in need. And that irony is that he never confides in others about things that bother him. While this is massively hypocritical of him, it’s also understandable. An orphan who was found and adopted by the leader of Tantalus when he was an infant, Zidane grew up having no idea where he was from or what race he was (it’s important to note that in a world full of various humanoids such as dwarves, anthropomorphic rats, hippos and fish, Zidane was the only person he knew who had a monkey-tail until very recently). As a result, he ended up feeling cut off from the rest of the world and longed for a place he could call home where he did not have that sense of isolation and he was with people who could relate to him. True, he views Tantalus as his family and he puts great value on his friends but even from them, he puts up a wall between himself and them.

That said, Zidane isn’t a gloomy person, despite his loneliness. Instead of dwelling on his problems, he’d rather concentrate on the positive side of things, lend a hand to his friends and be the big brother or leader whom other people can depend on. When a crisis happens, he prefers to be the level-headed one to rally everyone together so they can find a solution and move forward. He’d rather do that than focus on his own worries or fears.

However, if something that bothers the young thief hits him hard enough that he can’t avoid it, his perky attitude fades and he becomes massively depressed and grumpy. Because Zidane refuses to confide in others and would rather be seen as the tough, cheerful guy who can help others and not be bothered by anything, he doesn’t know how to describe how he feels when something does bug him so much, he can’t hide it. One example of this was when Dagger, the first girl he had truly fallen in love with, was about to become queen. Zidane had hit on Dagger plenty of times but was in a massive muddle about how he honestly felt about her and how to express those feelings. Consequently, he ended up sulking in a bar and later decided to run off to another city to distract himself instead of confiding in others. This behaviour is extremely rare for Zidane. However, when it does occur, it can take tons of pushing to get him to bounce out of his funk.

The good news is that Zidane has recently realised that he does have to confide in others just as they confided in him. However, he didn’t do it by discovering his birthplace. Well, he did find his birthplace but doing so didn’t cure his loneliness and sense of isolation like he hoped it would. In fact, it temporarily made those things worse. After all, there was no reason for the young thief to suspect that he was an artificial construct, created on another planet in order to wipe out all life on the planet he grew up on and the only reason he had avoided this fate was pure luck. And yet that was the truth that awaited Zidane there and it almost completely crushed his spirit. In utter despair and anguish, the young thief tried to leave his companions. As far as he was concerned, he was supposed to be their enemy and could no longer travel with them even though he had no intention of fulfilling his destiny. Besides, none of his friends would understand how he felt, and he’d just be a burden to them.

Luckily, Dagger, the girl he was deeply in love with, helped him come to his senses. Calling Zidane out on his inability to share his heart, she pointed out that everyone wanted to help and protect him just as he helped and protected them. Her words made Zidane realise that his friends could read him more than he had thought and that he needed to ask them for help.

And this has obviously had a positive effect. Zidane is starting to open up a little about his feelings even though he still finds it difficult at times (eg. he tried to thank Dagger for giving him a pep talk when he tried to leave the party but found it a struggle because he wasn’t used to talking so honestly). The thing is, Zidane is in many ways pretty mature and wise for a 16 year-old, as we can see with the insight he gives to his companions. However, that doesn’t mean he isn't a teenager who's trying to learn and grow from like most kids his age. Learning to be honest with others about his worries just happens to be one of those issues.

And this learning will come into play in Life After. Zidane will still be that cheerful and optimistic guy who will want to make friends with new people, take charge (or at least be one of the calmer voices) when there is a crisis going on, take the role of the moral support and still put his life at risk to save people, simply because that’s what he believes in doing. That said, there will still be a barrier between him and the friends he makes in Life After simply because one day, he will go back home to where he belongs (with his friends on Gaia, the planet he grew up on) and will probably never see them again. However, with time and maybe some pushing, he will make attempts to open up, little by little. It’s something he’s still working on and he knows he’ll need help if he wants to survive.

And he will still be that idiot who is distracted by cute women. Some old habits die hard.

Abilities:

Zidane is a thief and an actor. He is part of Tantalus, a group of thieves who poses as performers as cover ups for their illegal activities. Zidane can steal things, raid houses, beat up people in order to take their disguises and lie pretty convincingly (he managed to avoid a fight with a security guard by framing him, which resulted in the security guard being fired and becoming a wanted man). He’d be a great help on a sneaking mission when you are trying to break in somewhere undetected or if you’re distract guards.

The acting background also helps Zidane keep a cool head when things are chaotic. While he can lose his temper (when it comes to people hurting his friends mostly), is not emotionally invincible and does have his depressive moments in canon, he’s pretty good at holding himself together in dire situations. At one point in the game, Zidane witnessed the city he grew up in being destroyed by Dagger’s mother and an eidolon and while he could have lost it, he had enough self-control to lend a comforting arm to Dagger, who broke down in tears.

Additionally, he’s quite an agile fighter in combat, being able to use twin daggers or a swallow blade (which appears to be two blades combined with a hand in the middle. He has not brought one to LifeAfter). Zidane isn’t as physically strong as his companion Steiner but he’s quite fast and acrobatic. He’d be pretty good at dodging quickly although if he gets hurt, he’d injured more quickly than most fighter characters, especially as he puts himself in danger to protect his friends.

Zidane also has the ability to enter Trance, which is similar to Limit Breaks in other Final Fantasy games. When Zidane is attacked a number of times or he feels a massive surge of anger and glows pink. His clothes disappear and are replaced with pink fur and he is able to dish out various attacks. His strength also increases. The attacks he can do are listed here: https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Dyne_(command)

Because he’s an endgame Final Fantasy character (and endgame FF characters tend to be ridiculously powerful and I want to make things fair for other players) and because I want to level the playing field for other players, I’m happy for the damage caused by Zidane’s Trance powers to be severely reduced in the sense that they all can only hit one person and while they can injure someone, it's unlikely to kill them. I’m also probably only going to activate it when a story thing comes up like Zidane trying to protect an injured friend.

Being a Genome (an artificial race made by his creator), Zidane has a long monkey-like tail, which is prehensile enough for him to hold onto beams and rafters with it (and it can hold his weight). This is useful if he is trying to dodge someone. However, I assume it’s not prehensile enough to do something like hold an object as there’s no evidence in canon for it.

Finally, Zidane is able to read and understand the ancient language of Terra (the planet he was originally from). This is something he did not learn but discovered he could do when he went to Oeilvert. Zidane had no idea why he could read this language at the time and it’s almost certain his creator programmed the ability into him. This ability is unlikely to come up and be of any use in Life After, however.

Inventory: Zidane will be bringing:

The clothes on his back.

Five potions – these can restore a small amount of health.

Orichalcon -This is Zidane’s strongest dagger in the game. It’s power is reduced but it can still do some neat damage.

A dagger. It’s just an average dagger which Zidane always carries around with him. It won’t be nearly as strong as the Orichalcon but it’s his favourite dagger as you can never discard or sell it in-game.
